The Doctors TV Show Names Electronic Cigarettes A Top 10 Health Trend

A recent episode of the popular series “THE DOCTORS TV SHOW” named the Top 10 Health Trends of 2009, including the revolutionary and still relatively unknown smoking alternative device – the Electronic Cigarette. This is pretty big news and a positive sign for people who “Vape” all across the U.S., as mainstream exposure can only help further the success and acceptance of these products.

The doctors on the panel stated that for the millions of people addicted to smoking, there may be some hope in a safer alternative. The Vapure brand Electronic Cigarette is a high-tech device that gives the sensation and impression of smoking, but does not emit the 4,000+ chemicals that combustion tobacco products produce.

The only chemical that enters the user’s system is nicotine, and the “smoke” produced that can be breathed in and out is actually water vapor.

“For some people, this may be a big help to get them to quit smoking,” Dr. Ordon says. “We don’t want to get people on nicotine; that’s not good, either [because it] constricts your blood vessels, but it’s a lot better than consuming all that tar and charcoal and carbon monoxide [that is in cigarettes].”

Ordon fails to mention however, that cartridges sold by companies such as Vapure are available without nicotine if that’s what the customer prefers. And indeed, many users are also able to enjoy low-density nicotine cartridges with the eventual goal of cutting the habit altogether.

Moreover, the doctors on the show seem to believe that E-Cigs are only available in the UK and China, while in truth there are several U.S. based companies offering a variety of products. Electronic Cigarettes are not and have never been illegal, so it is unclear why many people seem to think they can’t get them stateside – most likely a result of FDA and Big Tobacco propaganda.

On the topic of the FDA, it is also mentioned on the show that Electronic Cigarettes haven’t yet been approved. While this is true, regular combustion cigarettes have never been and will never be FDA approved either, so it’s something of a moot point. On top of that, all of the individual ingredients of E-Cigs are FDA approved, the agency just hasn’t put the time and money into clinically testing the kits as a whole.

There are other misstatements and misleading information the doctors state within the show – such as starter kits will cost you $150 – but all four the hosts did try E-cigs themselves and spoke with a smoker who gave a positive review of the product.

It would have been nice if The Doctors TV Show more faithfully did their homework before airing incorrect information, but the exposure was a good start and a small step in the right direction toward the mainstream embrace of Vapure’s smoking alternative.

You may have seen Hollywood hunk and heartthrob Robert Pattinson with a cigarette in his mouth, not exactly the sexy image that most of his loyal followers picture in their fantasies. But the droves of Twilight fans might be in luck – there is an alternative that might save Robert’s skin, hair and that kissable breath.

Charlie Sheen Tries To Negotiate Smoking Privileges In Jail

Due to the debacle in Aspen over Christmas, Charlie Sheen may serve up to 45 days in jail. And his biggest concern is being able to smoke behind bars!

The actor’s attorney, Richard Cummins, has been asking local law officials if they would be willing make an exception for Charlie regarding the jail’s no-smoking policy.

Authorities are not likely to bend over backwards for Sheen, but Aspen’s Pitkin County Jail does allow nicotine patches for inmates. But the discussion of electronic cigarettes may be open.

Compared to other jails, Pitkin County is luxury living. The spacious living area is covered with plants, inmates have access to the TV and they are allowed to mingle with the opposite sex in shared areas.

The jail is also known for its cuisine. On Christmas day, the jail served prime rib for lunch and Cornish hen for dinner.

“He’d be crazy not to want to do his time here in Aspen,” said an official.

Inmates served prime rib?! WTF?!

This is jail. Not the country club! Maybe we should send him an e-cigarette!!

I always knew I wanted to smoke. I know it sounds crazy, but ever since I was little, I knew I wanted to be a smoker.

I do, however, remember times of crying to my mom, begging her not to smoke because I didn’t want her to die, and flushing her long, brown cigarettes down the toilet; Only to see her running at my sister and I and yelling about how they cost a lot of money and we should not ever flush them down the toilet.

My mom was not a smoker though. My mom was an occasional, non-inhaling, want to fit in the crowd type smoker. She would smoke with friends, she would smoke at parties, and then nothing. My dad, a surgeon, used to bring home wooden signs that said, “thank you for not smoking” in order to deter her friends and her from smoking in the house. (They eventually got a divorce and decided to stop communicating through signs… but that is another story).

I remember, at about age 14, I snuck a cigarette from a pack in my mother’s room, and tried desperately not to crush it while sneaking into the wooded area behind my house. I looked around me, not once, but about 50 times, and took my first puff. I loved it. I knew I would love it, I wanted to love it. I scooped up some dirt and tried to bury it in a spot that I could come back to later, and covered it with a leaf, ran home, brushed my teeth, washed my face, and tried not to stink.

Then, I made plans. It may sound crazy, but I imagined my future, and having my own apartment, and being able to smoke and nobody would be able to tell me not to, and nobody would ever know. At 14, I wasn’t making plans to be somebody, I was making plans to be a smoker. And sure enough, as I willed it to do, my plans became a reality.

Fast forward to January 12th, 2010. I have been a smoker for 15 years. I have three beautiful children who I would die for, but would rather live for. I quit during pregnancy, but lit up almost immediately after delivery. I still, love, love, love smoking.

I have awoken this morning on January 12th, a bit hungover from my husbands birthday party the night before. I am barely able to make breakfast, I make my shot of Nespresso, and step outside to smoke. All of a sudden, I see my 2 year old son, the youngest of the three, making cute little faces to me through the door, while my two older girls played along. I started to think about how they saw me, and how I felt about myself. How their breakfast had to wait for my cigarette, their homework had to wait, their stories about school had to wait, they had to wait.

It was at that very moment that I made another plan. I tried to quit so many times before, only my husband and I knew of my failures. This time I was for real. I was going to quit. Cold Turkey. I was going to tell my kids. There was no turning back.

I did well on day one. I kept remembering how my kids were counting on me, I did it. Day two was not so easy. I was disabled. I truly couldn’t get up. I was glued to my computer, searching for aids to help me quit. I knew the nicotine patches and gums never worked. I had to find another way.

I searched all about nicotine, found out, that although it was the only addictive factor in smoking cigarettes, it was actually not bad for you, that it exists in many vegetables. The problem is, cigarettes contain more than 4000 chemicals along with that wonderful nicotine. If only I could find one that didn’t contain those chemicals. Well, I am a master searcher online, and I found exactly what I needed. The electric cigarette.

Once again, I was consumed by a new search. Only now, it became complicated, there were warnings from the FDA, I was getting worried, there were a number of types to choose from, I was getting confused. I found that all of the ones that I had searched were made in China, they were unregulated, and what went inside of them was fairly unknown. Now, as a mother of three young children, I was all too familiar with the whole “made in china” recall fiascos their toys went through. There was no way I was going to inhale a possible recall.

I searched and searched and finally found a site, the battery is custom made, requiring only two pieces, and the vaporizer which contains the nicotine and the atomizer, are made in the U.S.A. (Well, once I did, while my E-Cig was charging, and I didn’t enjoy it at all).

I enjoyed smoking with friends, I enjoyed the nicotine, I enjoyed the inhale, I enjoyed the exhale, I liked the feeling of the smoke in my mouth, I liked the way it went with my coffee and how I felt smoking after a meal. I have all those feelings now, only I don’t carry any of the negativity, smelling bad, hiding from my kids, taking breaks around others who don’t smoke, the endless worry of whether I will be lucky enough to get hit by a bus and die rather than die of cancer, or not being able to breathe. I love breathing, it is why I smoked in the first place, the paced breathing.

There are many other imitators out there, from Smoking Anywhere, NJoy, Cloud 9, Greensmoke, etc. Most of those companies are three piece sets of confusion and chinese liquid. Some companies have US made liquid with crappy batteries that fall apart. You know what you are dealing with once you order. If you wish to try a brand, look for a company that stands behind their product, gives a strong warranty, makes you feel safe to purchase, and offers future support. After all, these don’t come cheap, and I am the first to say you don’t always get what you pay for with electronic cigarettes.

American Lung Association Lobbies to Ban E-Cigs, But Do They Realize What They’re Doing?

State legislators have been flooded this week by a new wave of lobbyists, but not sent from what you might consider the usual suspects. This pack of joy-killing money grubbers are employed by – brace yourself – the American Lung Association. Yes, even a non-profit that claims to care about public health and awareness actually wants to kill you.

While at a glance their crusade to get electronic cigarettes banned might seem like a reasonable effort, a closer look seems to indicate that the ALA is not only driven by a lack of information but will end up on the wrong side of history in the fight for public health.

A source within the ALA even acknowledged the blatant benefits of electronic cigarettes, in part:

“Yes there are fewer chemicals but your body is still being exposed to chemicals that should not be in your system. Nicotine can also cause the body harm, so yes many of the products do contain nicotine, but used correctly a person uses the products to wean down their nicotine level so they can completely get rid of it. Many people are using the e-cigs as an alternative to smoking the regular cigs thinking that it will not harm them and have no intention of quitting, just switching.”

Keep in mind, this is an organization that openly proclaims their dedication to “save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease.” Why then, when e-cigs are a clear improvement over combustion cigarettes in terms of health would they rally against this smoking alternative that could save millions of people from serious health issues.

Moreover, the ALA admitted that electronic cigarettes contain many fewer chemicals than tobacco cigarettes – namely the 4,000 and change that are created when you light up with combustion. Yet they refuse to publicly acknowledge the health benefits to smokers who switch from tobacco to electronic and effectively avoid these toxic chemicals altogether. And if the ALA at its core is just concerned about nicotine addiction, then they must also be aware that numerous long-term studies have shown that nicotine alone is relatively harmless and comparable to caffeine. The American Heart Association even acknowledges that nicotine can be considered safe in smoke-free delivery systems like patches or gum.

Additional research has also shown that smokers who use NRTs (nicotine replacement therapy) almost never eliminate their usage or dependence on nicotine entirely; only 7.2% anually are able to discontinue chronic use of gum or patches. In other words, the ALA’s zealous insistence on complete nicotine abstinence (and subsequently forsaking electronic cigarettes) is naive at best and disingenious at worst.

Why? Because the ALA also knows what most e-cigarette insiders have been saying for years – the vast majority of vapers (vaping is the term for vapor inhaled vs. smoke) did not pick up electronic cigarettes because they wanted to quit smoking. In fact, a questionnaie of a self-selected sample of 783 daily users found that 92% of respondents chose e-cigs for reasons other than quitting smoking. The most popular reasons cited were that electronic cigarettes are cheaper and reduce the risks associated with smoking; less than 8% said quitting the habit was the primary motivation.

So despite the fact that an overwhelming super-majority of e-cig users moved away from tobacco products for health and economic reasons, the ALA wishes to block and remove the only safer alternative on the market? Does it make any sense that in their supposed pursuit to promote the health of Americans and people worldwide, they want to eradicate a brilliant invention and force electronic cigarette use to go back to tobacco products?

As if further fuel to the fire was needed, the ALA’s belief that e-cigarette users will switch to traditional NRTs or quit altogether is disproved in yet another e-cigarette user questionnaire conducted by CASAA. This survey explored the habits and motivations of almost 1,000 electronic cigarette users and indicates that, not only is the typical e-cigarette user a former smoker over the age of 26, but that they have overwhelmingly cut back or quit the use of tobacco cigarettes and have noticed improved health effects – indicating they provide the “improved lung health” the ALA is seeking to promote.

Most importantly though, the results glaringly contradict the assertion that electronic cigarette users will quit using tobacco if e-cigs are removed from the current market. Over 80% of the respondents indicated they would likely return to smoking tobacco products or use another smokeless tobacco alternative, such as snus. Less than 20% stated they would attempt to quit nicotine use altogether – and of that 20%, around 7% would likely be successful based on the study mentioned earlier in this article.

In an ideal world, the nicotine abstinence approach might be possible, but the evidence presented in present day reality simply doesn’t support such a notion. The ALA should have the wisdom and fortitude to acknowledge this.

The bottom line that is most underscored is that of promoting general well-being and improvements to our lifestyles. If the American Lung Association is truly committed to the betterment of smoker’s health worldwide, then they of all organizations should be cheerleading the expansion of electronic cigarettes – NOT crusading to ban them.

The ALA might be well-meaning and impassioned, but they would be wise to get their facts straight first. Especially before unleashing a torrent of money and lobbyists on our capital cities to drown out the inevitable rise of the Electronic Cigarette – something that could drastically improve global health over the next few decades and into the rest of this century.

Federal Judge: FDA Has No Authority Over Electronic Cigarettes

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- A U.S. judge said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration doesn’t have authority to regulate electronic cigarettes, dealing a blow to the agency’s efforts to regulate tobacco products as drugs or devices.

In a 32-page opinion, U.S. District Judge Richard J. Leon sided with electronic cigarette maker Smoking Everywhere Inc. in finding that the FDA has no authority to regulate the products and can’t stop them from entering the country.

“This case appears to be yet another example of FDA’s aggressive efforts to regulate recreational tobacco products as drugs or devices,” Leon said in his ruling. He added the FDA’s “tenacious drive to maximize its regulatory power has resulted in its advocacy of an interpretation of the relevant law that I find, at first blush, to be unreasonable and unacceptable.”
